Guitar Lessons

Have you ever seen a guitar and thought, "One day I'd love to learn how to play that!" Well, why not start today.

At Ignite we have our own music books that we work from, but we also try to include songs that each student knows and enjoy listening to.  We teach how to read guitar tablature, play chords and different strumming patterns.  All of this helps students to have the necessary skills to play in a band setting.

Along with weekly lessons, we encourage our students to participate in our Ignite Music Academy Concerts.   This helps to develop their skills, as well as giving them a sense of self worth and confidence.

We teach in local schools as well as the Ignite Music Academy Studio which is located in Kamo, Whangarei.  We can also do lessons online, if you are unable to come onsite.

Weekly half hour lessons are $310 per 10 week term.  This is to be paid for in full, at the start of each school term.  There is also a one off registration fee of $10 per student.

Our 9 year old daughter Rosie has had a term learning keyboard with Rachel. She was a little nervous to start with, but after her first lesson came home so excited to practice what she had been taught. Most days without asking we hear Rosie practicing her songs on our keyboard. Rachel's number approach has really been successful with Rosie giving her confidence. She has so much fun learning this new skill.

We can't recommend Rachel more highly.

Piano Lessons

There is nothing quite like sitting down at the piano and playing a song that other people know.  That is why with beginner students, we use a number system that allows students of all ages to play simple songs from their first lesson.   As they get more confident, we add chords to make the songs come alive.  We try where possible to use songs that the students know and enjoy listening to.  Along with the modern songs, we also teach how to read music, with a strong emphasis on chords and keys to allow students to play in a band setting.

Drum Lessons

"Drumming is easy right? You just hit the drums with some sticks!"  That works if you want to clear the room, but to make great music, you need a bit more direction!

Here at Ignite we have our own music books that we work from, but we also try to include songs that each student knows and enjoy listening to.  We teach how to read drum music, play to a metronome and a variety of drum beats.  All of this helps students to have the necessary skills to play in a band setting.

I feel like I have grown so much with your encouragement and teaching.  When I come to my singing lesson each week, I know that I'll be coming into a fun and loving environment.  Thank you so much for what you've done for me.  My singing lesson is my highlight of my week.

Naomi, NCEA Music Student

Singing Lessons

From beginning to advanced students, vocal conditioning is our top priority.  Each lesson involves exercises designed to stretch and strengthen the muscles used for singing, in order to prevent any long-term damage to the student’s vocal cords.  We look at a wide range of skills utilised in singing. These include: warming up the voice, correct breathing techniques, tone, extending range by developing the different registers, (chest voice, mixed voice, head voice or falsetto, flageolet and vocal fry).  We will then use these techniques and apply them to songs.  I also teach harmonies and do vocal coaching to help with NCEA singing performance exams, competitions or performances.

Thank you for being my singing teacher.  I have really found that I am able to sing a lot more songs because I can not only reach a lot of the high notes, but I can reach more lower notes too.
